He seems very alert and is begging as always, following me around the room etc. He is still very active but he has been swimming slightly lop-sidedly since we got him (I put it down to not having deep enough water but now not so sure). I have taken as much out as possible and the filter seems to be doing a fairly good job at breaking it up but I wondered if this could be coming from the turtle? Is it likely that he is ill or is it more likely to be some kind of contamination from the food being as it is a new set-up? On checking on him this morning and turning his light on, I noticed a very large amount of thick, stringy white slime clinging to the edges of the water/tank and some floating around as well. I do have to feed him in the tank as I have no alternative but this has been fine for the last couple of weeks. I have been feeding him both 'king British Turtle and terrapin complete food' and freeze dried river shrimp, a little bit at a time, every other day. The water level is approximately 5 in at the moment due to lack of materials for basking area (there is a large slate platform propped up by the slate substratum at the moment but need more slate to prop it up higher before the water level is increased). It has been moved into a tank which is approximately 4 ft by 2ft by 1.5ft with heater, basking light and filter (3 days ago).

Since coming into my care, the tank was sorted out so that he could swim, and had a filter/heater/light working. It is approx 5 inches long (shell only) and it was being kept in a very small tank (approx 2.5ft by 1ft by 1.25ft) with about 3 inches of water, effectively no heater or filter (both out of the water) and no lights. My partner and I rescued my red eared slider from a friend of a friend about 3 weeks ago. I am a very new turtle owner and very worried as of this morning.
